You are the key

After writing on life as a piece of music, I remembered a dream I had a few years ago.

I dreamed of being with a friend of mine in a sacred jungle as he translated text from the Bible. At some point, he looked up at me and said:

“Don’t be afraid to get old— it’s just your body melting off to reveal the key you are underneath.”

As he said this, he himself started to melt like a television image turning into static, and as he did, a very clear sound began to ring.

Then, I woke up.

I immediately sensed that this dream was not like my usual ones, which were a way to process my day or a representation of my current state of mind.

I knew that this was an important dream, one that carried a message about a deeper truth.

But what does it mean, to be a key underneath?

My first clue was the sound that rang as my friend melted. In music, a key is a group of notes that forms the tonal basis of a piece of music.

If we are keys, then we each have our own particular tonal basis to our energy and presence, one that we embody and is at the essence of who we are.

Sometimes people have a high pitched energy, while others are low and bassy, aggressive and intense, or lilting and flirty. Sometimes, their actual voices are similar; other times, they have voices that are unexpected, but that very tension between their voice and their energy is also part of their unique mix of notes within their energetic key. Everyone, though, has different dimensions to their energy that comes out over time, just like a key is made up of several notes.

This makes even more sense when we think about the fact that emotional energy is radiating waves and sound is simply an interpretation of received waves.

Of course, there’s also the obvious meaning of key as an object that opens doors.

Do you remember the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer? It was my favorite growing up. Not sure how much it’s aged well, but I do remember one particular character— Buffy’s sister, Dawn. She comes into the series about halfway through and turns out to be an ancient energy that can open doors to different dimensions, or “The Key”, that was transformed into a human form so that it could be kept safe and hidden from those who wanted to use it for evil.

What if we are keys in the same way? I’m not sure about literally opening up doors to other dimensions where demons live, but there’s a subtle way in which humans do hold the potential to open different dimensions.

Have you ever had an experience where you were amazed at how someone (perhaps you) saying or doing something can change the whole direction of a situation?

For instance, I once had to ask my dad for help in changing some shared travel plans. I was really nervous he would be furious because I have had that happen many times in the past. But I had also been flippant before, so I chose to try a different angle and trust for the best. So, when I called him, I was very calm and talked in a manner that conveyed that I was asking for a favor, and that it would be fully understandable if he couldn’t help. In the end, he could not change the plans but he did honestly try and I was amazed at how incredibly kind and pleasant he was about the whole thing.

That’s one example of how, in a subtle way, we can open up “different dimensions” in our experiences by bringing a different energy to the situation. In the same way that certain songs can open up a flood of emotions in us, so can our energy open up things in the world and people we interact with.

If we combine these two meanings of key, it leads to the idea that we each embody/hold several fundamental types of energy and that these energies can be used to open situations and people up.

The questions that follow then are:

  • What are my energetic notes?

And, like a musician or composer learning to play and write music…

  • How can I learn how to use them to open up something within others?
